A super fast website for Pizza Hut.
More and more people are finding their way online to have food delivered to their homes. At Pizza Hut, they are noticing this too, as more and more people are ordering their pizza online. They noticed that the current website could not handle peak times. That led to a lot of delays, which ultimately resulted in fewer orders coming in. Time to change that!
Time for a 'retouch'
In 2016, we took over Pizza Hut's website from another party. Before we took control of the website, we first looked at the current situation. We performed an audit focusing on the application architecture, server infrastructure, code quality, speed and security of the website. We also looked at the maintainability and scalability of the web application.
It soon came to light that the speed on mobile was not sufficient and that the overall usability needed to be taken to the next level. Two things that are very important to guarantee a high conversion rate.
A custom redesign
That there was a lot of room for improvement on the website was clear. So in collaboration with Us, we worked out a redesign for Pizza Hut with a focus on conversion optimization and mobile UX. Through A/B testing, we ensured that the new design not only looks good, but is also as user-friendly as possible.

Architectural changes for a performant and durable web application
Improvements were also needed on the back end of the Web site. The website was running on an outdated Zend framework and the code was difficult to maintain. We were briefly held back by Covid in 2020, but afterwards we went full steam ahead! In 2022, we migrated the web application to a state-of-the-art Next.js (React) frontend. The beating heart of the application is a Symfony API that provides communication with PizzaHut's internal systems and ensures that the front-end can easily work with this data. Why this set-up? Next.js is super fast thanks to static web pages and server-side rendering. It offers content as a Single Page Application, but is also available via URL so it can still be indexed by search engines. What an SPA is and what the benefits are, we wrote about that earlier in this blog. All the content on the website was delivered in a headless cms system in Drupal that sends all the data to the Pizza Hut website. All these changes have ensured that the application is now much faster and also much easier to maintain, making it ready for the future and further developments.

In this first phase we have not yet taken performance optimization into account, and we are already getting page speed scores of 95%. When we put extra focus on performance in the second phase, this will become even faster.
But most importantly? "Since the launch of the improved webshop, the performance/speed has increased tremendously, and the mobile UX has also improved tremendously. We ended the year with the highest number of mobile transactions per week ever.
